The problem

Our internship batch ran on a paper roster. To check your shifts or your duty points you had to go and find the sheet.

What I built

I built RotaMate and I still run it. I wrote the first list of requirements, and I'm also the one answering support messages. Interns use it to book shifts and keep an eye on their duties and points. They can add friends and join study rooms. Coordinators get a console for interns, departments and rotation assignments. There are notifications and home-screen widgets too, and a short tour the first time you open the app. The AI part is the Duty Assistant. It began life as an app called Hazmed, and the store listing still carries that old name in its id.

How it works

  1. Booking and points run on fixed rules. I rewrote them myself, so any intern can see every allocation that touches them.
  2. With the Duty Assistant you just type your question as you'd ask a colleague. Most interns write in Arabic.
  3. Gemini 2.5 Flash searches the catalogue of published duty guides and nothing else. It comes back with three guides at most, best match first.
  4. Then you open the guide and read it yourself. The guide has the final word, and after the guide, your seniors.
The Duty Assistant's rules

It will

  • Answer from the published duty guides and nothing else.
  • Rank up to three guides, with the best match first.

It won't

  • Make up a guide that isn't in the catalogue.
  • Give a dose or a clinical call the guides don't cover.
  • Guess. When it isn't sure, it sends you to a senior.

I wrote these into its instructions.
